Domain and email
To use your domain, we move it to your Cloudflare account without breaking email.
For your site to show on your domain (for example, yourdomain.com), the domain has to be active in your Cloudflare account.
What changes
- The domain’s nameservers change to the ones Cloudflare assigns you. Nameservers tell the internet where to find everything on your domain: the site, the email and the rest.
- The domain stays registered where it is today (NIC Argentina or another registrar). It isn’t transferred and doesn’t change owner.
Your email keeps working
If you use email on your domain (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or your provider’s), its records are copied to Cloudflare before the change: MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC. We also copy subdomains and other services’ verification records.
How we do it
- We review your domain’s current records and ask you for a zone export from your current provider. Some email signatures (DKIM) can’t be seen from outside.
- We add the domain to your Cloudflare account and check that every record is there.
- We confirm you approved the site’s preview.
- Whoever manages the domain (you or your provider) changes the nameservers. We tell you exactly which ones to use.
- Once Cloudflare activates the domain, we connect it to the site, with and without
www. - We check email, the site, the HTTPS certificate, and that old addresses lead to the new ones.
What we need from you
- Access to where your domain is registered, or someone who can change the nameservers.
- Which email service you use.
How long it takes
The nameserver change usually takes a few hours and sometimes up to a day. Your previous site and your email keep working in the meantime.
